Anti-piracy communications system launched
(Feb 25 2011)
Applied Satellite Engineering (ASE) has introduced a new system which aims to allow crews on a vessel under attack by pirates to retreat to a safe area while still maintaining communications links with the shore.
The Citadel safe room solution incorporates Iridium satellite voice services and GPS reporting, and is kept separate from the usual vessel communications system.
ASE suggests that, when a ship is boarded by pirates, the crew withdraw to a designated safe room, or citadel, and power down all systems, leaving pirates with a dark ship and no control.
The ASE phone is installed in the safe room, providing emergency and periodic GPS reports as well as voice calling services. A battery backup system can power the system for 24 hours in a powered standby mode, or for a few days in a periodic mode.
The system includes an outdoor transceiver, cable, lockable cabinet, corded phone and optional battery backup. Additional phones such as a captain's phone or crew calling phone can be installed on the ship from the same system.
The transceiver and antenna are housed in the same enclosure, about the size of an American football, to reduce antenna cabling distance problems. The unit should be mounted hidden from view, with the cable routed internally within the ship.

'SatChat for Iridium' Released |
|
Applied Satellite Engineering (ASE) announces ASE SatChat ™
A powerful extension for the Iridium 9555™ Handheld Satellite Phone
Scottsdale, Arizona. October 12, 2010 - Applied Satellite Engineering (ASE) announces it’s SatChat Program for Windows™ as a powerful enhancement for the Iridium 9555 satellite phone.
ASE SatChat is a simple, yet powerful chat, email and instant message Windows™ program for the Iridium 9555.
By connecting the Iridium 9555 to a Netbook or PC, ASE SatChat leverages the short message service (SMS) and email feature of the Iridium 9555 phone to transform it into a powerful text-based email communication platform, without the need for a dial-up or Internet connection. All messages are routed directly through the Iridium 9555 phone as a standard SMS and standard Iridium SMS charges apply.
ASE SatChat allows “chat” communications that work with marginal signal strength or coverage--users can create messages from indoors or when the Iridium 9555 phone is not attached to take advantage of later delivery (or receipt). Messages can be queued up when a satellite connection is present or even when it is not. The program also enhances the Iridium 9555’s mobile communications capabilities in suboptimal locations where there is no direct line-of-sight to a satellite such as outdoor settings where mountains, trees, buildings or canyons offer limited views to the sky. ASE SatChat also bridges geographical divides by enabling ongoing communications with co-workers, clients, and friends who may span across multiple time zones. The platform also allows for continued communication in noisy environments where heavy machinery or alarms associated with construction, natural resource exploration, or emergency relief efforts would make voice calls difficult to sustain.
"We are extremely excited about the power of ASE SatChat. Not only does it provide for ‘instant messaging’ over the Iridium network, this text-based communication method supplements verbal communication in noisy first-responder or relief effort environments where information is critical," said Jeff McFarland, president, Applied Satellite Engineering. “While the Iridium 9555 is intended for remote use, the ASE SatChat has proven extremely effective, even when the signal is blocked by buildings, trains and other obstacles. In fact, we were able to communicate by email and SMS using the application on a train in Tokyo.”
“ASE SatChat is a powerful tool for satellite phone users since it builds on the already truly mobile, global and reliable service provided by the Iridium 9555,” said Joel Thompson, vice president of product management at Iridium. “Our customers usually are in the most remote places in the world and in the harshest environments. ASE SatChat adds a new element to the Iridium gold standard that we’ve delivered for the past 10 years when it comes to reliable, critical communications lifelines.”
Multiple color-coded chat windows, and group chats and broadcasts, are managed easily from the Netbook or PC interface. The program also works with all of ASE's powerful and feature-rich docking stations and Comcenter II fixed station terminals.
ASE SatChat will sell for $199 (USD), although it will offered at an introductory price of $129 for a limited time. To download a free trial version, or to purchase, visit www.ase-corp.com/satchatforiridium or contact a participating Iridium service provider.

Iridium Certifies ComCenter II Series |
|
ASE's ComCenter II Series Fixed Station Terminals are designed for corporate and maritime applications. The ComCenter II Series combine an integrated 9522B LBT with custom ASE electronics to provide a complete voice and data terminal solution.
Extended distance voice and data interfaces for the office/vessel infrastructure are achieved with RJ-11/POTS for voice links and Ethernet for data links. Additionally, a reduced feature, data-only model, is offered for applications that do not require voice communications.
The ComCenter II is an upgrade replacement to ASE’s original, Iridium certified, ComCenter I. The main difference between ComCenter I and ComCenter II is the data interface. Replacing the RS-232 data interface, the ComCenter II provides an Ethernet port to simplify data and network connectivity as well as providing unique new IP-based features not possible with RS-232.

Whale Wars! |
|
ASE's Fixed Station Terminals were spotted aboard the Sea Shepherd's newest fleet addition in Season 3 of Whale Wars. The Bob Barker, famous for "The Price Is Right" and one of the best-known personalities in the world of animal activism, donated funds to purchase a third vessel to add to the Sea Shepherd's fleet. Ironically, the ship is a former Norwegian whaling vessel but has since been renamed and refitted.

Whale Reporting System Uses ASE SBDpro |
|
Chrisar Software Technologies (Chrisar), an IT company specializing in software systems engineering and signal processing in the marine environment, chose Applied Satellite Engineering (ASE) to develop a satellite data solution for a whale reporting program that uses the global satellite network operated by Iridium Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: IRDM).
ASE is using the Iridium short-burst data (SBD) modem with specialized software customized for this application. Watchstanders on participating ships will use the system to record and transmit reports of whale sightings through the Iridium network to a central server, which will save it into a database and transmit warnings via Iridium to all subscribing ships whose tracks are likely to take them close to the animals.

The Arizona Republic - Ariz. technology part of Alaska's Iron Dog race |
|
What do desert rats know about improving Alaska's longest and toughest snowmobile race? Turns out, a lot.
Three small businesses from Scottsdale, Chandler and Phoenix combined to create the competitors in last month's Tesoro Iron Dog snowmobile race.
Using the Iridium satellite network, the devices added a measure of safety, reducing search time in case racers wandered off course or got hurt in the freezing wilderness. Iron Dog officials also used them to give fans a way to follow the race in real time via the Internet.

IRIDIUM TO PROVIDE SATELLITE TRACKING FOR SNOWMOBILES IN ALASKA’S TESORO IRON DOG RACE |
|
The Iridium-based tracking devices are supplied by World Communication Center (WCC), an Iridium value-added reseller and service provider, in collaboration with Applied Satellite Engineering (ASE) and Ontec Technologies. ASE and Ontec have partnered to develop a Web-based global mobile asset tracking application using the Iridium satellite network.
The ASE SBD Pro tracking module utilizes Iridium’s short-burst data service. The unit is powered by the snowmobile’s 12-Volt battery and has convenient front-panel LED status indicators to show power, GPS tracking and Iridium satellite connections at a glance. It also has an optional “man down” tether switch that automatically sends a distress message, which includes the GPS location if the driver is thrown from the snowmobile. This message can be sent to a predetermined email address, pager or cell phone and is user defined via the Ontec Web portal.
